Asset Languages Assessment Scheme

Asset Languages Logo

Asset Languages is an assessment scheme which provides recognition of achievement and accreditation for language learners. It does not replace existing external examinations, such as the GCSE and A Levels, but exists alongside them, offering tests which are more appropriate for adult learners following evening classes. Official Asset Languages Test Centres can enter students for separate external tests in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The cost varies, depending on the level, starting at £4. Successful candidates receive an accredited OCR qualification and a certificate.

Eventually there will be external tests at 6 levels, matching the official DCSF Languages Ladder. The Languages Ladder defines the learner's performance in each skill in terms of what they can typically do. For a PDF file outlining these so-called 'can-do' statements, click here.

At present there are tests at the first four of these levels for all of the languages we teach as part of our Extra-curricular Languages Programme.

Loughborough University Language Centre is an official test centre and students following our Extra-curricular Languages Programme have the option to take Asset Languages tests. They do not need to decide when they register whether they wish to do so, but are advised to get a copy of the relevant language specifications if they are interested. Registration for the tests is in February on payment of the fee charged by the exam board.
