Centres
The Department houses two centres related to teaching and research in Politics and International Relations. The Centre for the Study of International Governance (CSIG) is co-directed by Professors Hocking and Smith. It provides a focus for research on the changing nature of world politics, and the challenges posed by managing relationships between an increasingly diverse range of actors at the global, regional national and subnational levels. The East Midlands Eurocentre, a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence established in 2000, co-ordinates activities among a group of regional universities, with a particular focus on the promotion of European integration studies. Two members of the Department –Professors Mike Smith and Dave Allen – have been successful in obtaining Jean Monnet Chairs in the programme run by the European Commission, and these give the Department special responsibilities for teaching and research in European Union Studies.
The Department also has taken over the running of the European Consortium on Political Research's Standing Group on the European Union. The Group was created in 1995 to promote co-ordination among political scientists interested in the blooming area of research on the European Union.
Anarchism Research Group
The Department is also home to the Anarchism Research Group, established in 2010 to co-ordinate and facilitate work in anarchist studies in the Department and across the University.
French Politics, Policy and Society Group
The French Politics, Policy and Society Group is an official Specialist Group of the Political Studies Association of the UK (PSA).
