Politics and governance of sport

Sport and EU

Sport is a multifaceted phenomenon with political, economic, social and cultural dimensions and is a major dimension of civil society. The organisation and institutionalisation of sport emerged relatively independently of political authorities, but over time, national governments and international organisations have developed an interest in sport policies and the application of law to sporting associations.

With the intervention of public authorities, and the massive commercialisation of professional sport in the last decade, the governance of sport comprises a network of governmental and non governmental actors. Research focuses on the relations between governmental and non-governmental actors in the regulation of the sector and analyses the consequences of public policies and wider phenomena such as globalisation and commercialisation for sports governance. The study of sports governance also deals with the incorporation of concepts from private corporate and public governance to the structures of federations, leagues and clubs.

Currently, one of the most interesting case studies of public intervention in sports governance is the development of a European policy on sport by the European Union. The application of European law to regulate the activities of sports organisations and the quest for greater standards of governance in European sport whilst respecting the autonomy of sports organisations is a significant focus for this area of research.
