Governance and security

Security

Security - whether this be related to issues of terrorism, migration, the environment, human welfare, or access to resources – is a highly contentious policy domain. The same can also be said of the more traditional issues associated with strategy, such as the possession and use of military force. Topical issues like climate change, energy security, the conflict in Iraq and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction will be the focus of this research strand. As a theoretical underpinning, the research strand embraces a broad understanding of the twin concepts of security and strategy. Both of these concepts have national and international dimensions, and through bodies such as the United Nations, NATO and the European Union constitute an important, if sometimes overlooked or under-theorised, aspect of governance. Staff attached to CSIG have proven expertise in the study of these institutions as well as the external security policies of major states such as Russia, the US, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Australia. Theoretically-informed work has also been undertaken on the concept of ‘security governance’. On the basis of this established expertise, CSIG will act as a venue for guest speakers and for debate. It will, therefore, have an important outreach element, offering a venue for individuals and organisations of competing and sometimes conflicting views to present their opinions. In addition, it will also engage in more academic policy analysis, taking advantage of expertise within Loughborough as well as the University’s links with policy actors in government and international bodies.

Current projects under this research theme include:

  • 'Inclusion, exclusion and security governance in Europe'
  • 'NATO: survival or stagnation?'
  • 'Security in the EU’s common neighbourhood (Russia and the EU)'

Activities

Through invited lectures, seminars, discussion/reading groups and workshops, CSIG offers a venue for:

  • the discussion and dissemination of ideas.
  • the critical examination of theoretical perspectives.
  • dialogue between competing perspectives.
