'Between Scylla and Charybdis: energy security and climate change challenges in the European Union'

The Centre for the Study of International Governance, in the Department of Politics, History and International Relations of Loughborough University, is organising a two-day conference on EU energy security and climate change policy.  The aim of the conference is to shed  light on the EU’s approach to addressing these two challenges, as well as producing policy recommendations.   A second objective is to raise public awareness of these issues and the role of the EU in managing them. 

 

‘The Europeanisation of Football’

Date: 12-13 June 2009

This workshop is part of the project 'The Europeanisation of Football', in which the transformation of professional football in ten different European countries is being analysed. The project will result in a book co-edited by Arne Niemann, Borja García and Wyn Grant to be published by Manchester University Press in 2010 under a working title 'The Transformation of European Football: A Process of Europeanisation'. The objective of the workshop is to bring together the authors of the ten chapters to present their findings and discuss the structure of the book and its conclusions.

'Governance and management of sports clubs'

Whilst some of the top professional sports clubs in England seem to be dominating sporting competitions, such as the case of the football champions league or the rugby Heineken Cup, the management and financial situation of many of those top clubs is in tremendous disarray. The need for better governance and management in sport is a long-standing issue whose prominence in the public and political agendas has been raised in the last couple of years. The round table explored how to improve governance in sport.

 

‘Europe's Social Situation: Toward a more inclusive view?’

The European Commission President Barroso commissioned a stocktaking exercise of Europe's social standards, levels of wellbeing and major current social challenges. The Bureau of European Policy Advisers delivered a full document that merits much praise for its comprehensiveness and synthetic powers. This was put out to consultation, but from the contributions received in return, it is apparent that many more representative organisations could have responded. This event therefore aimed to bring diverse selection of stakeholders, who are usually excluded from such consultations and encourage them to contribute to the discussion of the document.

‘EU Nationals in the UK Labour Force: Economic Migrants or Free-Moving Citizens of the EU?’

Date: 28 November 2008

This workshop explored the political and social dynamics underpinning the movement of EU nationals to the UK, analysed sectoral and spatial variation in their employment patterns, and thereby elaborated the concept of mobility. The subject of this workshop is of pressing interest in intellectual and policy terms over the course of at least the next decade, as the EU continues to enlarge, and the free movement of labour between the EU's member states continues to be a statistically-elusive but politically-charged phenomenon.

 

‘The Performances of Power or the Powers of Performance’

Date:  21-22 November 2008

This interdisciplinary workshop, organised by Raffaella Bianchi, discussed the relations between power and the performing arts. The panels explored how the performing arts are connected with various modalities of power (political, religious, elites, protest movements, etc.) and how these are related to the performing arts (memory, identity, etc.). The workshop explored how the performing arts generate collective identities, serve as a means of societal/political protest and feed into wider nationalist discourses.

 

‘Transatlantic Misunderstandings: Gender and Sexuality Politics in Contemporary France’

Guest Speaker: Bruno Perreau

Bruno Perreau, Senior Lecturer and Academic Advisor at Sciences Po, Paris, compared France and the United States with respect to matters of gender and sexuality.  In particular, he explore the nature and significance of social movements in these fields, and evaluated their impact on traditional models of citizenship.  He also explored policy-making at the national, local and international levels that, directly or indirectly, target gender and sexuality.  Bruno offered reflections on the (mis)understandings and (mis)representations of these matters in Franco-American relations.

 

‘After the US Presidential Elections’

'Challenges for South African Security and Intelligence '

Talking about current and future challenges for South African security and intelligence, Barry Gilder shared his experience of working for the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), serving as a Department of Home Affairs Director-General and a Coordinator of South Africa’s National Intelligence Co-ordinating Committee (NICOC). This seminar was open to everyone with interest in intelligence and/or South Africa issues.

 

'National Intelligence vs the Sub-State Actor'

This seminar was the first of six in a series of events that aim to explore issues around intelligence in the 21st century. It focused on the role that intelligence can play in confronting sub-state actors in the two major theatres of our time – insurgencies in the Middle East, and terrorism at home. Using an expansive definition of intelligence the three sets of panellists explored the range of usable and contextual information, and how these products are used, to open up new ways of thinking about intelligence and sub-state actors.

 

‘1st PSA Anarchist Studies Network Conference’

‘The European Commission White Paper on Sport’

Third annual Sport & EU workshop, co-sponsored by CSIG and UACES, focused on the 2007 European Commission White Paper on Sport from a variety of perspectives: societal role of sport, economic function of sport, organization of sport, social dialogue, and also addressed other issues surrounding sport and the European Union. Keynote speech was given by Mr Andrzej Rogulski of the European Commission’s Sport Unit, Directorate-General Education and Culture.

 

'Franco-British Cooperation: European Security and Defence Policy'

A small-scale simulation exercise on the subject of Franco-British cooperation with students from 'France in the World' option, including French students, plus others who wished to participate fully. This initiative was supported by the UK section of the Franco-British Council. It was conducted as a student-centred simulation exercise.

 

‘Operation Allied Force: Ten Years On’

Date: 25 April 2008

In anticipation of the tenth anniversary of NATO’s Operation Allied Force (OAF) against Serbia, this workshop examined the lasting legacy of that event. It considered OAF’s status as an example of ‘humanitarian war’, its impact on the long-term development of NATO, European defence cooperation, the status of Kosovo, UK foreign policy and Russian relations with the Alliance. The workshop brought together a range of experts and scholars to discuss the historical and contemporary relevance of this watershed event in European security affairs.

 

‘The 2008 Italian general elections’

After the fall of the 20 month old Prodi II government, the Italian electorate went to the polls on 13-14 April 2008 to decide who should govern the country. This lunchtime roundtable discussed the electoral campaign, the general election results, and the implications for future domestic and foreign policy. Following a brief introduction by Dr Maurice FitzGerald, a panel of discussants - Raffaella Bianchi, Lorenzo Cladi, Andrea Mura and Dr Christina Ujma - addressed these and other related issues.

 

'Neighbourhood Challenge: the EU and its Neighbours'

Date: 18 January 2008

The workshop discussed different aspects of the European Union's relations with its neighbours. The aim was to go beyond the analysis of European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and discuss the EU's entire neighbourhood from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus to North Africa; from the Western Balkans to the South Caucasus and Central Asia. In this way, the workshop contributed to the existing debates on the EU foreign and security policy.

'Learning and its application to the EU's foreign and security policy'

This workshop engaged in discussions about the nature of learning processes within the realm of the EU’s foreign and security policy. It aimed to contribute to a better understanding of processes of learning, the channels of learning and its impact on ESDP policies as much as to define better strategies for intra- and inter-institutional learning. During the workshop, the academic debate was enriched by insights from practitioners from several international organisations.
