Abstract
New possibilities for the control of mechanical vibrations, and mechanical systems in general, have emerged recently with the introduction of the “inerter” concept and device. The inerter provides a force proportional to relative acceleration and may be used together with springs and dampers to synthesize the most general class of mechanical impedances which are physically realizable. Advantages of the method have already been demonstrated for automobile suspensions and motorcycle steering. This research is a first study on the application of the method and related concepts to railway vehicle systems in combination with active control techniques.
