Abstract
The centre of gravity (cg) of an aircraft is of fundamental importance to its stability and performance. The cg will vary as fuel is consumed and when the aircraft manoeuvres and fuel sloshes in its tanks.
Although there are already various techniques used to estimate the cg this project will investigate using a model-based approach based upon using Kalman filters. The Kalman filter will be used to estimate unexpected changes in angular acceleration which are related to changes in cg. The longitudinal and lateral cg of an aircraft will estimated. BAE Systems have specified the accuracy and performance requirements that the estimator should satisfy, and also the aircraft manoeuvres under which it should function correctly.
