Abstract
The development of offshore wind energy has led to a significant increase in constructions of offshore wind farms within the last few years. The primary construction mechanism is still percussive piling. Numerous studies have been preformed by Loughborough University and NPL to characterize acoustic properties of these operations and potential effects on marine fauna. Detailed in-situ assessment of multiple marine piling operations have been carried out on several UK wind farm. This data has provided some of the most detailed analysis of marine piling operations to-date.
This work includes the design and implementation of at-sea measurements to provide detailed acoustic field assessment and the development of new equipment and experimental procedures to improve current best practice. State of the art modelling techniques are then used to predict potential impact on marine fauna including direct and cumulative exposures for marine life within the area.
