Carys has both UK professional and European CREE registration as an ergonomist, with expertise across the full range of systems-related human factors topics.  Her key skills are in knowledge lifecycle management systems, organisational and cultural aspects of enterprise modeling techniques, organisational systems architectures, dynamic allocation of function and the design of complex systems.  She is active in both the military and civilian domains.

She has extensive and varied consultancy expertise, turning her applied research into practical advice for a number of organisations including the European Parliament, the Ministry of Defence and a range of engineering organisations in the UK and Europe.  She is a member of the Engineering Systems of Systems Research Group in the Department.

She is a reviewer for UK EPSRC and DTI funded programmes and a registered ‘expert’, project reviewer and evaluator for the EU Framework Programmes. In addition she is a reviewer for various academic journals and national and international conferences. She has a particular interest in the promotion of women in science, engineering and technology (SET) and is a Mentor on MentorSET: a national mentoring scheme for Women in SET

Dr Carys Siemieniuch is a senior lecturer in the Dept of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University and has worked as a Systems Ergonomist for 22 years in the manufacturing and aerospace domains. As a PI/CoI on a range of EPSRC (8), EU (6) & MoD/Industry (7) funded projects, she has developed new understandings about: knowledge lifecycle management systems, organisational and cultural aspects of enterprise modeling techniques, organisational systems architectures, dynamic allocation of function and the design of complex systems.

She is a registered member of INCOSE, the UK Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, has European CREE professional registration and is a registered Proposal Evaluator and Project Reviewer for the EU Framework Programmes.

She has over 100 referred publications in the area of organisational and system design. Prior to joining the University in 1987 as an RA in the Human Sciences and Advanced Technology Research Institute, Carys worked in the automotive industry for 10 years: her research has continued this focus and expanded to encompass aerospace and engineering organisations in both the military and civilian domains.

1974 - 1977     Management Trainee with Turner & Newall.  Undertook a number of training courses and placements in different departments (eg production, planning, finance, marketing) at Ferodo Brake Linings in Chapel-en-le Frith and then moved to Payen/Hall Gaskets in Slough where I worked both as a shop floor supervisor and then Export Office Supervisor

1977 - 1980     Moved to Leyland International in London as a Programmer for Landrover & Military Sales, which required me to act as the link between Sales and Production Planning.  Then, as a result of company-wide re-organisation, accepted a job as an Economic and Political Market Analyst in the export marketing department of Leyland Vehicles in London


2005 Together with 2 colleagues Carys has recently set up a consultancy company to offer advice and guidance to SMEs in the manufacturing/ engineering domain in the UK - an exellent example of transferring knowledge and 'making a difference'.  
Work carried out here includes process change and work instruction documentation, constraint management, capacity management, implementation of new systems for managing throughput etc. 
Examples of contracts completed include:
Company "S":  Lead times reduced from 8 to 2 weeks, 100% On Time in Full achieved within 3 months, Throughput increased by 100%
Company "G":  Lead time reduced from 18 to 12 weeks, 40% extra capacity released for no consequent increase in operating expense, overtime cost reduced significantly, Due Date performance improved to 90%+

Carys is a member of the newly formed Engineering Systems of Systems Research Group (Web site under construction), which takes an holistic view of Systems of Systems design, focusing particularly on the interoperability, sustainability and re-configurability aspects of systems with the overall aim of improving their predictability and usability.
