Saim Memon is a PhD research student funded by EPSRC studentship through the CALEBRE (Consumer-Appealing Low Energy technologies for Building Retrofitting) project working at Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST); where he is working on the design & development of triple vacuum glazing systems for the reduction of building/ dwelling heat loss which reduces fossil fueled power consumption and ultimately reduces the carbon emissions.
Background
Saim Memon started his professional career in Electrical Engineering from 2004 and completed his BEng degree with distinction and achieved 5th class rank in 2008 from Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Pakistan. During undergraduation, he did internships and wrote conference paper on CSP(Concentrated Solar Power) technology at the national conference in Quad-e-Awam University of Engineering & Technology-Pakistan where he had been awarded shield and certificate with compliments as youngest undergrad student conference paper contribution in Pakistan . With his curiosity in higher studies, he has chosen his dream country UK to study MSc in Mechatronics from Staffordshire University in 2008 and graduated in 2010 with upper merit and 1st rank in his class. He had been socialised and participated in academic institutions during his postgraduate studies from 2009. He had been elected as an Executive officer (PT), Quality & Development committee representative, NUS delegate at Staffordshire University Students Union, and PostGradTaught committee member (PT) at National Union of Students(NUS) for 1 year up to July 2010. Within his part time volunteer work, he had maintained his study commitment and participated in various student union workshops, conferences, and arranged events for the strong representation of students. In June 2010, he joined as a Member in the professional Engineering institutes i.e. The IET and IEEE where he asked from The IET to join North West Midlands committee and later selected as the committee member in The IET NW midlands. He started to participate in the events and meetings. After his graduation in July 2010, he has written research proposels and shown keen interest in PhD where he has been awarded two scholarships from Cranfield and Loughborough University within three months of his completion of MSc. In October 2010, he has chosen right place to start his PhD study at Loughborough University. He left IET NW Midlands committee due to change of region and joined The IET East Midlands as committee member. He is now participating, supporting and running events In the IET East Midlands Young Professional. In October 2011, he has been selected for part time teaching role (Distance Learning Tutor).
With his growing interests in the university's action plan, policies and monitoring issues, he has accepted the responsibility to represent PhD/EngD students of Energy Division at Student Staff Research Committee from Feb 2012. Also in the same month of Feb 2012, he has been approached by Loughborough Students Union Pakistani Society to activate and represent this soceity and he has been elected as Events Coordinator.

Current Research Project
CALEBRE (Consumer Appealing Low Energy Technologies for Building Retrofitting) project funded by RCUK and E.ON. The project aims to establish a validated, comprehensive refurbishment package for reducing UK domestic carbon emissions. I am working on W.P.3.4 Vacuum and Aerogel Insulation components in which I am designing and developing triple vacuum glazing with experimental and theoretical analysis in CREST laboratory.
Past Research Projects
1) Robot Self charging station for the application of mobile alarm intruder detection robot.
2) Electrical Installation & protection of Multistory Building having detailed case study on electrical and vertical transportation system computer design using AutoCAD 2004.
Tutorial marking and helping students through discussion board for Distance Learning students who are studying MSC Renewable Energy Systems Technology online.
