Photography Competition 2010 - The Winners!

First Prize: Professor Roy Kalawsky
Getting up close to your data
This image shows the intuitive interactive visualization system developed by the Advanced VR Research Centre for the collaborative project EFAS Environmentally Friendly Airport Traffic Management Systems (Thales, Loughborough University, NATS, BAE Systems, Helos, Flight Refueling, Qinetiq, Manchester Airport, Selex and Manchester Metropolitan University). The project was concerned with investigating different solutions to minimise noise and gaseous pollution at local airports by employing solutions such as continuous descent approaches, increasing length of runways, increasing numbers of runways, etc. The key to the project was the presentation of data in an easily interpreted form to provide new insight and understanding.
Second Prize: Dr Paul Lepper
Offshore Windfarm Construction

It shows the completed pile foundation after piling. Measurements made during the entire piling sequence to characterize underwater radiated noise and acoustic impact.
Third Prize: Jiang Zhu
A Solar Roof

There are outdoor facilities for photovoltaic (PV) research including many PV modules amd cells, inverters, pyranometers, and wind speed sensors etc.
The PV modules mounted on the roof generate electricity from the sunlight while all the data are recorded for research.
This outdoor PV testing site at Loughborough is the largest one and has the longest outdoor monitoring data for research purpose in the UK. This picture was taken in May 2010.
