Prospective Students
Welcome to the Department of English and Drama
Going to university is a serious business. After all, if you study for a degree full-time, you will be committing yourself to three years of intensive academic work, let alone considerable expense and perhaps the upheaval of moving away from home. Anyone thinking of doing a degree needs to think carefully about what they want from their course and what they want from their chosen university.
So, what are you looking for in an English and/or Drama degree? Loughborough enjoys an excellent reputation in both disciplines, providing respected qualifications and, crucially, a very rewarding student experience. In the 2010 National Student Survey, Loughborough Drama and English both came 2nd nationally for overall satisfaction. As these figures suggest, Loughborough is a first class academic institution, but it is also a university students enjoy attending.
What can we offer?
- Experienced and friendly academic staff with international scholarly reputations
- A curriculum which blends ancient with modern, allowing you to study classic and contemporary texts and providing both an excellent overview of your subject and a chance to specialise within it
- Top quality teaching from subject specialists at every stage of your course
- A progressive model of assessment which replaces traditional exams with a range of essays, presentations and, on some courses, group work
- Purpose-built facilities for rehearsal and performance
- A well-stocked library and up-to-date IT provision
- Opportunities to study abroad in Europe and further afield
- A dynamic, informal environment in which every student is encouraged to fulfil their individual potential
- A Department which is big enough to be lively and bustling, but with around 500 students, not so large that you'll feel lost or isolated.
