Figures are for gross expenditure unless otherwise stated.

¹ Resource budgets for DCMS sponsored museums and galleries

² Capital budgets for DCMS sponsored museums and galleries

³ Figures for Local Authority museums are revenue expenditure
(i.e. do not include capital expenditure).

Revenue expenditure is spending on the day to day running expenses of the service, so called because it is the cost of resources used up in the process of generating revenue.

This is distinct from capital expenditure, which reflects the amount spent to acquire or improve long-term assets such as premises purchase or renovation and major equipment purchase.

Net expenditure is gross expenditure minus income.

* Sales volume figures up to 2004 are calculated according to BookScan's GRM (General Retail Market), while those for 2005 are calculated according to TCM (Total Consumer Market). Since this adds to GRM book sales from important non-high street channels such as internet retailers, selected supermarkets and chains, the figures are not strictly comparable.
