Applying bibliometric methods to investigate scholarly communication with particular focus on economics

Funded by Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

Project Staff: Dr Jonathan Levitt mentored by Professor Charles Oppenheim

Duration: July 2009 - June 2010

Description: The aim of this project is to build on the Dr. Levitt’s doctoral research by applying the bibliometric methods developed in his doctoral research to investigate topics of current research interest in scholarly communication.

In his doctoral research, Dr. Levitt found: (a) In science and social science, many highly cited articles continue to be heavily cited more than twenty years after publication, (b) In science, the citations levels for multi-disciplinary research are substantially lower than that of mono-disciplinary research, and (c) Amongst library and information science articles, that are not cited, the proportion of collaborative articles has remained almost constant over the past three decades.

This current project seeks to add to these findings by investigating topics of current interest, including collaboration, disciplinarity and research evaluation.  Its method is to analyze citation data obtained primarily from, the Web of Science database.
