Research has developed a new road safety data knowledge base, confirmed by the European Commission as a new standard tool for the EU.
The Transport Collisions Research Group, within Loughborough Design School, has led the research to develop a new road safety data and knowledge base called the European Road Safety Observatory (ERSO).
The success of this research has culminated in the European Commission choosing it as a standard tool for the EU and national level safety policy development. It has also been praised by the European Parliament. Since its establishment in 2006 it has been emulated at a national level by many EU Member States including the UK, Spain, Czech Republic, Netherlands and France.
The research programme was led by a team at Loughborough University’s Design School, in conjunction with 22 international organisations. The programme involved the development and application of a series of new methodologies that would help characterise the fundamental aspects of road safety in a manner that would be applicable internationally while being based on the most up-to-date information available in the area.
The aim of the Observatory is to coordinate all community activities in the fields of road accident and injury data collection and analysis, with the research programme aiming to design the scientific evidence, user requirements and the best dissemination principles for the project.
To date the availability of the Observatory has improved the evidence base available to road safety policy-makers and this has improved the quality of decision making, particularly in countries with less well developed road safety cultures.
The ERSO continues to have an impact in new areas with the European Commission currently developing a serious injuries strategy which will apply to all Member States. In 2013 the project was awarded the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its contribution to road safety and the impact on policy-making and casualty reduction.
