Liliana Rodriguez MA Interaction Design, Post-Degree in Arts and Design Education

Liliana's first degree is Product Design; She has a Post Degree in Art and Design Education from the University of Stirling and a Master in Interaction Design from Domus Academy. At the moment, Liliana is a visiting researcher at Aalto University, writing her Ph.D. thesis: TECHNOLOGY APPROPRIATION AWARENESS & DIAGNOSTIC for Digital Services’.

She is in essence a hands-on design thinker who likes to work with people from different backgrounds, and form interdisciplinary teams. She thinks about users and clients as partners in the development of services, since they have the most valuable insights and work with them using participatory and co-design approaches.

Liliana has more than 10 years’ experience researching and designing services and experiences, and for the past seven years, designing and researching for the digital platforms.

As Associate Researcher at Sheffield Hallam University, Liliana was part of the Innovation Futures (IF) team.  IF is a European funded research project that aims to contribute to the development of a region-wide culture of innovation, and to create strong links between small and medium (SM’s) businesses and the University.  She was involved in the development of digital services for SM’s. The SM’s were in a diverse range of areas, from health services (Westfield) to student accommodation management (Ask4). Relevant examples of Liliana's work can be found on her website

As CREATIVE DESIGN FACILITATOR, she enables people to learn and to do their design work in the most effective way, helping them to open up their minds to new ways of approaching a problem. Liliana has been a Visiting Lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, running a series of video-prototype workshops in the Product and Product Engineering courses for more than nine years. She also works at the Open University as Associate Lecturer in the Design Thinking module

Liliana's PhD research explores the idea that a successful uptake of technology in the development of digital services (DS) is often mediated by end users’ appropriation of technology (TA).

This research also explores the idea that TA can help to enhance digital service effectiveness and acceptance and could help to create new services functionalities. In other words, technology appropriation is potentially a positive and useful phenomenon to aid the design and development of digital services. If this is true, it would be beneficial to take advantage of the potential of TA to design and further develop the DS. If a DS wants to take advantage of the potential of TA, it is fundamental for the service provider to be aware of the phenomenon. This study examines the state of awareness of services providers in digital services, specifically in the context of start-up companies.
