Overview

Demographic changes, together with changes in pension policies, life expectancy and employment practices, are reflected in the increasing age of the workforce.

In the UK, as elsewhere in Europe, there are now twice as many workers aged 50 and over than those aged 25 years or younger.  The aim of this research was to identify workplace opportunities and barriers to working into later life and the ways in which ‘design’ (e.g. equipment, tools, facilities, built environment) impacts on these, taking full account of the work systems context.

A web based tool ‘Organiser for Working Late (OWL) was developed providing a suite of web based design tools and resources to facilitate and support the design of the workplace for workers as they age.
