Alasdair Scott

Product Design & Technology BSc

"The Design School experience has given me strong knowledge of a broad range of skills, allowing me to develop myself professionally."

What have you gained from The Design School experience?

The Design School experience has given me strong knowledge of a broad range of skills, allowing me to develop myself professionally. Additionally, I have formed a strong bond with my course mates and have made lasting friendships.

My favourite thing about studying design at Loughborough has been the variety of the activities undertaken, which has allowed me to make full use of the facilities. The hands-on nature of the teaching enables you to engage physically with each project.

What is your best memory of your time at the School?

One of my best memories of the School was seeing my squash ball thrower, built as part of the mechanics module, achieve a record-breaking distance. It was very satisfying to see my design perform well after having mechanically analysed it.

What are you hoping to do after graduation?

I am aiming to secure a job within The Design School as a research associate, helping to develop exciting new technologies and adapting them for commercial use.

Alasdair is currently working as a Research Associate in the School.  He is currently working on a research project with Dr Guy Bingham.

Do you hope to pursue a career in design? What industry interests you?

I aim to pursue a design-related career with a preference for consultancy work.

What advice would you give to people aspiring to study design at university?

Prepare to work hard. The engagement that all design students show is testament to how enjoyable and rewarding the courses can be. Take the opportunity to explore and be creative – you will be pleasantly surprised with what you can develop.

What is your favourite part of the design process?

My favourite part of the design process is applying technology to a project in order to make it functional.

What is your favourite design style?

I am particularly inspired by textures and patterning, and how these can be integrated into the product.

I particularly enjoy working with metal, due to the permanence and precision that can be achieved from it.

Which modules have you most enjoyed doing over the course?

The BSc specific mechanics modules have been particularly enjoyable. It has been of great satisfaction to see theoretical knowledge used to develop operational and effective devices, such as the automatic can crusher and squash ball throwing projects.
