Sustainable small scale wastewater treatment
The project concerns sustainable municipal wastewater treatment. Sustainability is expected to be better attainable through a small scale approach instead of the currently applied large scale centralised treatment facilities, which have some major drawbacks; non-closing of nutrients cycles, large water consumption for transportation, mixing of pollutants, e.g. heavy metals with nutrients, thus yielding sludge not suitable for reuse. These problems can be circumvented by source control, preferably within the households. The project aims at systematically evaluating small scale alternatives with regard to sustainability criteria and operational and socio-economic aspects and at suggesting sustainable alternatives for the urban water cycle.
