Andy Emmott
Graduated with an MEng in Civil Engineering
The MEng degree has a brilliant balance between civil engineering practice and theory. The first two years, introducing a variety of subjects such as structures, hydraulics, geotechnics, materials and more, really helped me in my summer vacation placements.
The sandwich year was really well managed, allowing me to build links within my sponsoring company as well as feeling involved and in touch with Loughborough, despite being away. Returning to my studies for the final two years was far from easy, yet I was much more motivated, having seen in my sandwich year what opportunities awaited me as a graduate.
In these years, we expanded on the basics of structures, soils and water that we had previously been taught and new modules brought them together in challenging design projects. I particularly learned a lot from the 3rd year Teamwork Design Project, as never before had I experienced such a realistic and challenging problem to solve and present professionally. Also in these later years, the management and financial aspects of engineering are studied and it was really good to learn how to communicate design and construction details as well as how to create them.

Adam Greenfield
Graduated with an MEng in Civil Engineering
I originally joined Loughborough University on the 3 year BEng programme but I then decided that doing the industrial placement year was a good opportunity to gain some practical experience. This work experience also led to sponsorship in the latter part of my degree.
After my placement year, I transferred on to the MEng programme to help gain the extra knowledge which ultimately will help towards chartered engineering status. A variety of appealing and challenging subjects were studied throughout the course, from traditional structural analysis and mechanics, geotechnics, and fluid mechanics modules, to management finance and an outdoor teamwork and leadership course based in the Peak District. All of these helped prepare me for employment with my sponsor company as a graduate structural engineer.
My final year research project followed on from a problem at work when checking other engineers' designs involving the use of load bearing adhesives on site. The project lead to the destructive testing of full scale glued timber joints, which was both very interesting and fun.
