Guide to Programme Content

There are six main themes to the programme:

  1. Management principles and practice
    The organisation, processes and practices of building firms and projects, and the effective use of their human and other resources. This includes a residential outdoor management course.
  2. Construction management systems
    Management information systems, computer systems and the analysis of managerial data. Practices and procedures for the specification and measurement of building work, and the estimation and control of costs.
  3. Construction engineering technology
    The principles used in the design and construction of modern buildings. Plant, equipment, materials and techniques necessary for their construction. Factors that create a comfortable internal environment, and the necessary systems and equipment. Electrical and communication systems; design and construction for information technology.
  4. Legal principles and practice
    The English legal system, including company, contract, planning and employment law, and law specific to construction. European international law.
  5. Economics and finance
    The construction industry in the national economy, macro and micro economic theory applied to the construction industry. Economics of land and property. Financial and cost accounting principles, sources and control finance.
  6. Development of professional skills
    The two six-month training periods within their sponsor firm will enable students to develop the practical skills required to implement the principles taught at the University. These periods will comprise an organised and structured training programme.

At the University, students will be encouraged to develop their managerial and technical skills through individual and group projects, and to develop skills in oral, written and graphical communication through practical exercises.
