Background

I am a human geographer who has a long standing interest in commercial aviation. I graduated with First Class Honours and the Sir William Meyer essay prize in Geography from University College London in 2002. I then moved to Loughborough University and gained an MSc (with distinction) in globalisation from the Geography Department in 2003. My Master's thesis explored the growth of low cost airlines in Europe and how they were progressively reconfiguring the patterns of air services within the continent. After completing my MSc, I stayed in the Geography Department at Loughborough to complete my PhD. My doctoral thesis, entitled 'Producing Airspace. The contested geographies of Nottingham East Midlands Airport', was examined and awarded in 2007. Following a short period of postdoctoral research within the transport studies group, I was appointed as a Lecturer in Transport Studies at the end of 2008.

To date, my work has appeared in a variety of media and publishing format including peer reviewed academic journals, edited books, industry reports, and consumer magazines, and I have been invited to contribute to several television and radio programmes including 'The Secret Life of the Airport' on BBC2, 'File on Four' on BBC Radio 4, and a BBC1 'History of the World' programme on the subject of flight.

External Activities

I sit on the international editorial board of the Journal of Transport Policy and have worked with colleagues at Eurocontrol, the Commission for Integrated Transport, and the OMEGA (Opportunities for Mitigating the Environmental Effects of Growth in Aviation) academic research consortium on aviation research projects. I am currently working on a number of academic assignments with colleagues in the United States, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, and Australia.

Broad Interests and Expertise

Commercial aviation; airport operations; air transport policy; air travel and globalization; airport expansion, aviation and the environment; airline marketing; historical development of air transport.

Research Interests

I am currently a co-convenor of an ESRC-funded seminar series on sustainable aviaiton and I am working with colleagues in the Geography Department at Loughborough on the Port Health implications of commercial air transport.

Current Research Activities

Title(s):

Quantifying the disruptive impact of CAPE on air traffic flows through UK airspace.

Summary:

This EPSRC-funded research project aims to quantify the disruptive effect of convective available potential energy (a proxy for turbulence in the atmosphere) on air traffic flows through UK airspace and explore the impact that future changes in CAPE will have for air traffic flows in the future. The research is actively developing new empirical insights and developing new methods of data generation and analysis.

Previous Research Projects

Recent research projects include exploring climate related air traffic management procedures, assessing the environmental impact of airspace charging regimes within Eupe, and examining cultures of aeromobility in North America and Europe.

Other Information

In addition to my academic research, I teach on both the BSc in Air Transport Management and the BSc in Transport and Business Management undergraduate degree programmes. I am currently responsible for teaching three aviation modules:

CVA045 Introduction to Air Transport

CVB057 Aviation Planning and Operations

CVC066 Airline Marketing and Management

I also supervise final year avaition projects and act as Part A tutor for the ATM and TBM degree programmes. At postgraduate level, I supervise PhD students working in the field of aviation research. I am always happy to discuss potential PhD topics with interested parties.

I am the Library Liaison Officer for the School of Civil and Building Engineering.
