Studentships
EPSRC/Faculty Studentships
There are a limited number of EPSRC and faculty funded studentships per year (for three years study towards PhD), we award them by the end of July for students to start their studies in October.
Faculty/School Studentships
The Engineering Faculty/School may itself award studentships, at the same time, to exceptional applicants who wish to study for a PhD.
Both the above types of scholarship are very competitive and only candidates who meet the qualification criteria (e.g. have an appropriate UK/European residency connection) and have outstanding qualifications have a chance of success. Both types, if available, are advertised around May-June each year.

Assessment of Artificial Turf Performance through Human Testing
Artificial turf pitches are commonly used for a variety of sports, such as football, hockey and rugby. Their mechanical properties are designed to suit the requirements of the specific sport and achieved through appropriate selection of carpet design, infill and shockpad materials. For example, in rugby impact protection and traction are key features to be considered, while in hockey a smooth surface that provides consistent ball roll is critical. This project aims to develop a suite of valid and reliable tests that can be performed on artificial turf pitches to evaluate their performance from a player perspective. These are likely to include player perception and movement tests, the latter ranging from basic movements through to sport specific and in-game scenarios. A key aspect is the sensitivity of the tests, which must to sufficient to distinguish between pitch surfaces of different properties. Such tests would represent a powerful tool in the ongoing development of new artificial turf products and in benchmarking performance against natural turf.

Research Assistants
The School also obtains a variety of salaried research assistant posts each year to carry out government or industry sponsored research. Successful candidates may also register as part-time students to study for an MPhil or PhD, these jobs are usually advertised nationally.
