Introduction

Commerce and industry require people with skills in both information technology and management. Today’s managers require ‘hybrid’ skills, namely business management with IT. These degree programmes provides an excellent preparation for a challenging and rewarding career, offering a high level of knowledge and practical skills in both IT and management, giving an unrivalled platform on which to build a career in the knowledge economy. The programmes are approximately evenly divided between IT and management subjects. Teaching is by lectures, tutorials and practical classes. The optional additional year on professional placement is highly recommended. Candidates must be numerate, but the programme does not demand exceptional mathematical ability. There are no restrictions on subjects for A-Level entry (other than that General Studies is not accepted). There is no requirement for A-Level mathematics but a pass at GCSE is required at grade B minimum.

This degree programme and the Information Technology Management for Business degree are both taught by the Department of Computer Science and the Loughborough University Business School. The two degrees are very similar with most taught modules being common to the two programmes. The essential difference is that the ITMB programme was specified and is endorsed by the companies of e-Skills UK. However, the syllabus proscribed by e-Skills UK does not allow the same flexibility of options and project as the Computing and Management programme.
