Interests and experience

Main Group chemistry with an emphasis on Group 15/16 systems and their use as novel forensic reagents; coordination chemistry with an emphasis on the stabilisation of novel Main Group fragments, the use of sulfimides as ligands, the formation of extended arrays and Metal Organic Frameworks.

Current research

Work underway currently includes:

  • using sulfimidation reactions to link thio-ether and oxo-thio-ether systems (in collaboration with Dr Gill Reid at Southampton University).[1]
  • investigating the effects brought about by the use of the sulfimide Ph2SNH as a ligand, both in terms of the generation of unusual coordination systems [2] and of Metal Organic Frameworks. [3]
  • the first utilisation of a free selenimide [4]
  • looking at fundamental chemistry of Group 15/16 systems, including their interactions with zeolitic systems [5]-[8]
  • developing the forensic application of 15/16 systems, in particular using S2N2 to develop latent fingerprints on a range of media (eg the spent shotgun cartridge shown right) and to image inkjet traces [9].

Recent work has been funded by the following EPSRC grants: GR/N28221/01 (2000-2003), GR/S30832/01 (2003-05), EP/C510100/1 (2005-07).
