Research in Analytical Chemistry MSc
Overview
The MSc “Research in Analytical Chemistry” is an exciting new course designed for graduates in chemistry or a closely related discipline who wish to gain training in research methods and an in-depth knowledge of advanced analytical techniques.
The course provides:
- Research training for the global economy.
- In depth knowledge and practical experience of advanced analytical techniques.
- A project sponsored by a world leading company or internationally recognised laboratory.
- Training in research related professional skills such as experimental design, statistical analysis of data, calculation of uncertainty, information retrieval, health and safety, quality systems and intellectual property management.
The MSc courses in Chemistry at Loughborough are some of the few courses in the UK that receive national recognition and funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Who should apply for MSc Research in Analytical Chemistry?
- Graduates in chemistry or a closely related discipline who wish to pursue a research career in analytical chemistry or might wish to use this course as preparation for a PhD.
- Graduates with no previous experience of analytical chemistry/science who require a conversion route.
- Graduates with some training at undergraduate level who require advanced study.

- Information and Communication Skills
- Statistical Methods for Analytical Chemistry
- Professional Skills for Chemical Scientists
- 6 month long Industrial Collaborative Research Project counting 100/180 credits.
Specialist modules include:
- Separation Techniques
- Mass Spectrometry and Associated Techniques
- Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy
Careers
It is anticipated that graduates of this course are likely to enter careers involving a strong element of research and work at the leading edge of analytical science. Industries are likely to include: pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, environmental, national laboratories and instrument companies; and a significant proportion will go on to study for a PhD at Loughborough University or at other institutions.
