Chemistry Alumnus Honoured

Joy Spence, an MSc graduate in Analytical Chemistry (with honours) in 1978 was honoured for her contribution to the distilled spirits industry and the advancement of women in her the field with the award of an honorary Doctor of Science.

In 1997 Joy became the first woman Master Blender; an elite and utterly exclusive professional group. Today she is an acknowledged world authority in the production, refinement and creation of Rums and spirits of the highest quality. She has worked with J. Wray & Nephew Limited as Chief Chemist, General Manager, Technical and Quality Services along with her position of Master Blender.

The ceremony was held on 13 September 13 2012 and Joy gave a truly inspirational address to the graduates and their guests. She emphasised that excellence is rarely a happy accident, indeed it is the result of the creative, resolute and determined hard work. Joy urged young graduates not to impatient for quick success but to give of their best and strive to always add value.

Joy paid a handsome tribute to her Academic Supervisor Prof. James Miller (Former Head of Department, now retired), who she thanked for the kindness, inspiration and academic rigour that he showed her during her time with us.
