Managing radioactive waste safely

Research conducted at Loughborough – one of the few centres in the UK capable of undertaking comprehensive studies in this area – underpins international policy governing radioactive waste management.

The research, which spans more than three decades, ranges from deep geological disposal of more active wastes to the reduction of marine discharges, contaminated land and the management of radioactive materials produced by non-nuclear industries, including the oil, gas, steel and mineral processing sectors.

As well as shaping future policy, the research is helping to safeguard the environment now – changing the way radioactive waste is managed worldwide, including sites in Finland, Germany, Sweden and the UK.

Advanced research underpins both undergraduate and postgraduate radiochemical learning at Loughborough, preparing the next generation of nuclear specialists for the work place. Many of our graduates now hold key roles within the nuclear industry, regulatory bodies and international agencies.
