UKIERI grant awarded to Dr DB Das

UKIERI grant awarded to Dr DB Das in collaboration with KVSR Sidhartha College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Vijayawada, India  

The recently announced awards by the UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) has funded 2-year long project proposal by Dr DB Das in collaboration with KVSR Sidhartha College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Vijayawada, India. 

Delivery systems of the triptans (antimigraine drugs) and calcium channel blockers (anti-hypertensive drugs) play important roles in their onset of action. When administered orally these drugs show less and variable oral bioavailability which may be due to first pass metabolism. Hence, alternate route of administration, e.g., transdermally, is an ideal choice for these drugs. However, these drugs do not have ideal properties to permeate through the skin and, therefore, optimization of  transdermal delivery should be done by the use of  microneedles, a novel system that can bypass stratum corneum and deliver the drugs to systemic circulation. In addressing this issue, the project will aim to develop optimised microneedle systems for transdermal delivery of anti-migraine and anti–hypertensive drugs.
