Loughborough Chemical Engineering Student Represents The UK

November 15

Global Summit 2015 x 528

Chemical engineering Part D student Nicole Perrin travelled to China in September of this year to represent UK engineering students at the Global Grand Challenges Summit in Beijing.

This bi-annual summit is alternately organised by the British Royal Academy of Engineering, the American National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, with the intention of uniting industry experts and leaders to gather and discuss the global challenges that engineers will be expected to overcome in the near and far future.

A highlight of the summit was the Student Day, during which engineering student teams from across the three countries competed to pitch a novel idea and business plan to tackle one of the Global Grand Challenges to a judging panel of industry experts and academics. Nicole collaborated with students from universities across the UK from multiple engineering disciplines in the run up to the event, and then whilst in Beijing there was the opportunity to network with students from universities overseas including MIT and Tsinghua University, Beijing.

Nicole stated, "The conference was incredibly motivating, with talks from industry leaders such as  royal Dutch Shell and Lockheed Martin, through to academics, doctors and emerging technology experts in fields such as virtual reality."

Nicole’s involvement came about following her success in winning an Engineering Leadership Advanced Award, (ELAA), from the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014. Awardees are provided a bursary to contribute to experiences that will develop their engineering skills and future careers as industry leaders.

Nicole had this to say about her experience, "I never thought I would have the opportunity to travel to China and engage in such a world class conference. Winning the ELAA award made it possible and not only did I learn a lot from the distinguished speakers, but I am also very proud to have had the chance to represent the UK in a field I am very passionate about. I would encourage any students to apply for the ELAA award and take advantage of the incredible opportunities and exposure it provides. I was able to make the most of the trip and explore some of the magnificent country as well which completed the whole experience."
