IChemE Fluid Mixing Subject Group Research Student Competition

January 09

Two Loughborough University Chemical Engineering PhD students were awarded prizes for their presentations at the 2009 IChemE Fluid Mixing Processes Subject Group Research Competition on 7 January at Kings College, London.

The prizes were for £500 to cover registration and expenses to make oral presentations of their work at the 13th European Conference on Mixing in April 2009 in London.

Third prize went to Jolius Gimbun (pictured far left) for his research on modelling of gas-liquid stirred tank flows using coupled computational fluid dynamics and population balances. The aim of the work is to predict scale-up rules for gas-liquid mass transfer processes in industrial fermenters. Jolius is a Malaysian sponsored student from Universiti Malaysia Pahang who is currently writing up his PhD thesis.

Heema Unadkat (pictured far right) was the winner of the first prize for her work on using fluorescent particle image velocimetry and digital image analysis to measure turbulence levels in solid-liquid stirred suspensions. The research is conducted in collaboration with the Optical Engineering Research Group in the Wolfson School and aims to discover how turbulence is affected by the presence of small quantities of solid particles. Heema has just entered her third year and was formerly an undergraduate at Imperial College.
