Department success at Annual Frank Morton Sports Day

February 10

Loughborough’s Chemical Engineering Department joined dozens of other UK chemical engineering students at Birmingham University on 18th February for the annual Frank Morton sports day.

The sports day is named after the late Frank Morton, a chemical engineering professor who taught at both Birmingham and Manchester University. Morton, a keen sportsman, organised the first sports day – a football match between his two former departments. By the 1980s the event had grown to include other universities and feature a range of sports. It remains a popular date on the UK chemical engineering calendar and the event is always held on one of the campuses of the competing universities.

Football, netball, rugby and squash competitions were just some of the activities on offer and the Loughborough team scooped victory in both the hockey and rounders events. The Department were placed as runners up of the tournament overall, next to Birmingham.

Sponsors of this year’s event included ConocoPhillips; British Sugar; PepsiCo; Exxon Mobil; Croda; Unilever; M W Kellogg; BP and DBD Nuclear.
