Chemical Engineering Student Wins Two Awards!

January 16

Alec Wright presentation x 528

In 2015 Alec Wright, a first year PhD Student, attended two conferences, one in November at the Ricoh arena in Coventry where the Technical plasma workshop was held. Here he presented a poster and was awarded first prize for his effort’s. Then a second conference, titled  Midland’s Energy Consortium, held here at Loughborough University where he delivered a presentation and was again awarded first prize.

Alec works in the application of non thermal plasma coupled to microfluidics, with his presentations delivered on the pre-treatment on biomass using this technique. He designed and characterised a pre-treatment reactor which shows great promise in the challenging area of  biomass pre-treatment. He using a similar reactor based on the same principles in the field of AMR where he is treating waste water and having some promising preliminary results.

Alec said “I am delighted with these two awards, its great to get recognition for my work especially so early on in my PhD. I would like to thank my supervisors Dr Hemaka Bandulasena, Dr Felipe Iza and Dr Gilbert Sharma for their excellent support and guidance."

Alec's Supervisor, Dr Hemaka Bandulasena had this to say about Alec:

“Alec also won the Chemical Engineering MSc research project prize last year and I am really pleased that he decided to stay with us for a doctorate. His current work on the development of a DBD plasma microbubble reactors has many important applications in Environmental Protection and renewable Energy.”
