Through the Outreach Fund scheme, the Royal Society of Chemistry awards grants to enable individuals or organisations to run chemistry-based events and activities for public audiences. Soukaina Bahsoun, a chemical engineering student, was awarded a grant to run an after-school chemistry club at Holywell Primary school in Loughborough.

The club was titled “Let’s be chemists” and aimed to offer ten pupils in year 4 a memorable science-related experience that could have a long-lasting effect on their future and to raise awareness that scientific facts relate to daily life.

The club ran for 11 weeks in the autumn term of 2016. A variety of Chemistry topics were covered such as “acids and bases”, “chocolate and jelly”, “soap”, “bubbles”, “chemical reactions”, “lava lamps” and many others. In each session, children carried out experiments in a fun, enjoyable and highly-engaging atmosphere.

Soukaina reflected on her experience “I always enjoyed working with children and this grant took my outreach experience to a completely new level. It made me realise that we, postgraduate students, can have a huge impact on pupils’ thinking and attitude towards chemical sciences. This project was a rewarding experience that will hopefully lead to larger-scale outreach activities. I encourage other students to apply to the scheme. Many thanks to the Royal Society of Chemistry for funding the project, to the finance team at the department of chemical engineering for their patience and to Holywell Primary school for the warm hospitality.”
