Chemical Engineering at Loughborough announce ISO 14001/EcoCampus Platinum accreditation

November 14

The British Standards Institution (BSI) states that ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that outlines how to put an effective environmental management system in place. It is designed to help businesses remain commercially successful without overlooking environmental responsibilities. It can also help you to grow while reducing the environmental impact of this growth. An ISO 14001 system provides the framework to allow you to meet increasingly high customer expectations of corporate responsibility as well as legal or regulatory requirements.”

ISO 14001 is the world’s most recognised environmental standard.  Less than 15% of the sector have achieved ISO 14001 and only 28% of the Universities registered on the EcoCampus scheme have achieved Platinum.

Chemical Engineering and EMS contribution to Building Excellence strategy:

  • Educating for Success is a key aim within the University strategy stating “we will develop our students as individuals, enhancing their capabilities as creative, confident and adaptable 21st Century citizens who will make a significant contribution to global society”.
  • To achieve this, the strategy states that “we will embed sustainability and social responsibility into all of our processes, operations and developments”.

Sean Creedon, Laboratory Supervisor in the Department of Chemical Engineering stated, ‘As Chemical Engineers we are aware of our responsibilities both to the environment and to the wider community. Sound management of the Department’s Chemicals from initial procurement through to end of process is therefore vital if these responsibilities are to be met. Through working with our partners across the University we have developed a strategy which enables us to support the needs of Teaching and Research whilst satisfying the needs of ISO14001 accreditation. Not only does this lend itself to a safer, more sustainable working environment but also creates a culture that it is hoped our graduates and Researchers will adopt and take with them into their future workplaces.’
