During the first week of July 2016, 90 students attended summer schools across the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering, with courses taking place in Aeronautical Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Biomaterials.

The students came from across the UK and Europe, to get a taste of our engineering courses and to see the Loughborough University Campus.

The students participated in a broad variety of activities, themed by department, with an end project outcome.  Activities included; lectures; industrial visits; Laboratory work; building prototype buggiesand aeroplanes, (buggy testing shown in the photo below left), and then testing them; and;  project presentations and display competitions.

The students also participated in evening activities, where they explored the Loughborough University campus by taking part in a sculpture and building treasure hunt and took part in a formal dinner.

The dinner was held in the Turing Room at Holywell Park on the last evening of the student's stay.  Guests included: the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research - Professor Steve Rothberg, The Dean of the School of AACME - Professor Rachel Thomson, the CEO of the Smallpeice Trust and a large number of academic staff and PhD students who supported the students throughout the week.

This year, the visitors were also supported by some of our current students, one of whom - Hugo Crabb, who supported the Aeronautical Summer School, had this to say about the Aeronautical Engineering Summer School:

"The students were asked to build round-the-pole aircraft learning vital flight principles along the way and getting stuck into model aircraft building too . The attention to detail of some of the groups was staggering, with students taking such passion in their work. There was a marked change in the relationships of everyone at the end compared to the beginning of the course, with a great atmosphere and everybody having a great time."
