Background
Geoff Hankinson graduated from Leeds University in 1970 with a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering. He continued at Leeds for a PhD in Combustion before moving to Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University) to take up a lecturing post in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1981, Geoff joined the Research and Development Department of British Gas at the Midlands Research Station. There he worked on major hazards and risk assessment associated with the activities of the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.
In the mid 1990's he was appointed as manager of the 70 strong Safety and Environmental Department of Advantica which included responsibility for the Spadeadam Test Site in Cumbria undertaking work on behalf of Transco and other external organisations. In 2001 Geoff was appointed to the Royal Academy of Engineering – Advantica Chair in Pipeline Technology.

- Use of the natural gas-infrastructure to assist in the transition to the hydrogen economy by transporting mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen
- Experimental studies and modelling of gas build-up, fires and explosions involving releases of natural gas hydrogen mixtures
- Management of safety information
- The use of safety and economic objectives in the planning of the petrochemical industry in Kuwait
