An exciting online writing platform for budding – and established – creatives

  • The Student Wordsmith

Online writing platform The Student Wordsmith publishes the work of new and established writers.

Loughborough graduate and current PhD student Sophie-Louise Hyde (BA English, 2012; MA Creative Writing, 2013; PhD English) originally launched the site as a way to share her own writing, but quickly realised the potential of the initiative as a channel for fellow emerging writers.

Joining the Studio gave Sophie-Louise the business acumen to re-launch The Student Wordsmith which now has hundreds of followers and avid readers of the poetry, plays and prose it publishes each week.

As well as sharing original work online, Sophie published her first collection You is for University in January 2014. The anthology – featuring more than 50 pieces of work about the university experience – was issued by Loughborough’s student-led publishing house, Lamplight Press.

Sophie regularly runs competitions giving creative the opportunity to appear in print. The latest is in collaboration with mental health charity, Student Minds.

The Student Wordsmith was the winning graduate company at the University’s Enterprise Awards 2014.
