Postgraduate - MA Art and Design (Studio Practice)


Programme Length
1 year full-time: October to September inclusive – 45 weeks
Part-time by arrangement

The MA Art and Design (Studio Practice) aims to present an opportunity for those students who wish to develop the full potential of a practice based project proposal either as research or professional preparation and has been designed to enable access to a range of subject disciplines, workshops and external links as appropriate to an individual project. LUSAD offers specialist facilities in Textiles, 3D Design, Fine Art and Visual Communication. The programme encourages innovation in addition to the refinement of individual skills and practice. It is accumulative in structure progressing through six compulsory modules:

• Proposing Practice
• Research Methods & Methodologies
• Situating Practice
• Practice, Research and Entrepreneurial Skills
• Exploring Materials, Process and Techniques
• Studio Practice Final Project and Presentation

Students have the option of studying this final module at the Nan Yang Acadamy of Fine Art, Singapore

Assessment is continuous and based on an appraisal of practice, related research and professional and entrepreneurial skills in relation to the final project outcome(s). All students submit a Final Project Report.

The principal methods of learning and teaching are individual tutorials, group critiques, seminars and lectures. Full time and associate members of staff from the School of Art and Design (and other Departments) together with invited visiting lecturers representing a wide range of knowledge and research interests are available for advice.

Entry Qualification
Candidates for the programme will normally be expected to have obtained a good honours Bachelor degree or equivalent in an art and design discipline(s) or a closely related subject. A lower level qualification with appropriate professional / industrial experience may also be considered.

Application
All applicants submit a Loughborough University taught postgraduate application form and a project proposal that should contain an outline of past experiences, your proposed area of study, and an outline of the project you wish to pursue and why. The proposal should be approximately 1000 words. You should also include supporting visual material that can be submitted as either 35mm slide transparency, recorded on CD Rom or VHS videocassette.

No application will be considered without a project proposal.

Candidates may be requested to attend an interview.

All candidates are encouraged to apply in January and February.

Funding
There are a number of scholarships available from Loughborough University for both the MA Art and Design and PhD students. Candidates (UK/EU) accepted for MA Art and Design and PhD registration can also apply for bursaries from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, www.ahrc.ac.uk. The closing date for this national competition is early May. In order for the confirmation of acceptance by Loughborough to be achieved in time to make the deadline, intending AHRC bursary applicants are advised to make their application to Loughborough by end of February at the latest.
