Drawing Research at Loughborough
The activity of drawing in Loughborough University School of Art and Design is represented by the Drawing Research Group. The DRG actively promotes drawing through a variety of research initiatives and the membership share interests in the subject from a variety of standpoints, resulting in both individual and collaborative outcomes.
Our focus is upon understanding, articulating and promoting contemporary drawing practice, with an intention to contribute to knowledge of the act of drawing, through outcomes of original and international significance. We are committed to enquiring into what drawing might be in the 21st century as a multidisciplinary activity.
In 2008, we have hosted lectures by artists Susan Kemenyffy, David Shrigley and The Guardian political cartoonist Steve Bell and held participatory forums with Dr Linda Knight (University of Canberra) and New York-based artist Monika Weiss, in addition to a number of practice-based projects. These are documented within our Audio and Video Podcasts archive.
In November 2008 the DRG hosted the Drawing Research Network (DRN) Symposium Drawing: Research and Practice including speakers Brian Fay (Dublin Institute of Technology): Drawing, Research and Practice; Andrew Hewish (Centre for Recent Drawing, London): The Interstices of Enjoyment; Angela Anning (University of Leeds): Understanding Children’s Drawing. Keynote presentations are currently in a review process in order to establish an appropriate means of publication. Presentations from the day are available to view in the DRG Drawing: Research and Practice symposium archive.
February 2009 saw the third iteration of the Triptych project with Triptych Papers: Models for Research Based Practice taking place at the Norwich Gallery at Norwich University College of the Arts (NUCA). Participants from NUCA, Lancaster University, Loughborough University, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and the University of Ulster took part in the project. Further information on the project and symposium can be found at the Triptych Papers: Models for Research Based Practice page.
We are currently involved in working on the collaborative drawing research project …6767… with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.
The DRG has hosted a number of Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Fellows in the Creative and Performing Arts, including: Jenny West (1999-2003) Sculptural Drawing - Breaking new ground; Joanne Berry (2001-2004) Lightdrawings - a contemporary artistic medium; Dr Michael Shaw (2005-2008) Exploiting computer aided design and manufacture to expand Donald Judd's sculptural concept: Specific Objects.
The Drawing Research Group aims to provide, promote and support:
- an active programme of individual and group research outcomes in the UK and overseas
- involvement in collaborative publishing projects, including TRACEY : the online journal of contemporary drawing research
- a physical space for practice in the form of the Drawing Centre in order to facilitate pedagogical drawing research as well as enabling specialist projects to be conducted in a research context
- on-going collaborative joint projects with other research partners, individuals and institutions that examine research methodologies around drawing
Applications from students wishing to study the discipline of drawing as a core activity of their research interest at MPhil and PhD level are welcomed.
