Qualification(s): BEng (Hons)
Course: Civil Engineering

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I had been interested in studying Civil Engineering for quite a while and Loughborough University offered a high quality programme with a supportive attitude towards industry placements.

What attracted you to the University in the first place?

I liked that there were so many opportunities to take part in activities outside of my course, especially in sport.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoy the range of subjects covered and their practical application in labs.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The teaching quality on my course is incredible. Additionally the lecturers, technicians and other staff are very easy to approach and always ready to help explain course material.

Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course? Why did you enjoy it?

So far, my favourite module has been Integrated Sustainable Building Design. We worked in groups to design a conference centre with a focus on sustainable construction. Being able to apply our learning practically was refreshing and I am particularly interested in this area of study.

What kind of support have you had in the department and from the University?

Thus far, there has not been a time where support has been unavailable when I’ve needed it – people are always willing to help.

What are some of the exciting/different things you can do on your course?

One of the more exciting elements of the course is being able to design, construct and test multiple elements such as concrete beams. I find it interesting to attempt to combine very precise calculations with the imprecise nature of materials like concrete.

Have you completed a placement whilst at University?

I plan to complete a year’s placement within a civil engineering company. I hope to gain experience of environmental engineering and put into practice what I have learnt on my course.

What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?

When I graduate, I hope to do a PhD or work in the environmental sector of civil engineering. My Loughborough degree will have taught me all I need to become a capable engineer. The School will also support me whilst I complete my year’s industry placement, which will help me when I graduate.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

Loughborough is an amazing place to study and a great place to live.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

The social atmosphere is incredible. There’s a feeling of safety and community on campus. I have been a part of sport teams and social clubs such as rowing and salsa – there are so many to join and they are always very welcoming.

What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?

I enjoy the fact that both my course and university lifestyle are better than I ever expected.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

Loughborough University has inspired me to take more of a leading role. I am part of a student committee that is integral to the smooth-running of extra-curricular activities on campus.
