Year of Study: 2nd
Qualification(s): BSc (Hons)
Course: Transport and Business Management
Why did you choose Loughborough University?
My degree course is very specialist and Loughborough was one of the few universities to offer it. I had wanted a change from my job as a Motorcycle Technician and the Transport and Business Management course was a natural progression.
I was also attracted to Loughborough by its location. It is a commutable distance from Coventry with excellent motorway links, even though I now live in halls. The fact that Loughborough is a single site campus is also great and makes life a lot easier!
The course offered was the biggest attraction for me. The range of modules on my course appealed, as it gives a good grounding in all modes of transport and gives a practical aspect to management. The vocational aspect of my course was also appealing; coming in as a mature student meant I was not bombarded by lots of theory. It is also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport so you know it is relevant.
The level of mature student funding available was another big reason I chose Loughborough and the University recognises mature students have different needs to other students, and are really accommodating of this.
What do you enjoy about your course?
I particularly like the fact that my course is so specialist and we are a small department. It means I have great access to my lecturers. Plus being so small, we have a really close department and get the opportunity to engage with students from other years.
My favourite modules have been the Logistics and Supply Chain Management modules, as this is the sector where I would like to work upon graduating. You can also see how relevant these are to the real world.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
The teaching is excellent. We have guest lecturers who make sure we are getting the best possible teaching in that particular area. Also the fact the lecturers are always researching and writing journal articles shows they are keeping up-to-date.
Have you had any support from the University?
Having gone through a crisis while here at the University, I made use of the counselling service and accommodation centre. The counselling service has been excellent, and the staff in my halls and my warden were fantastic. They have looked out for me amazingly!
Within my department I tend to deal mostly with my course director. He has been fantastic and helped me out tremendously with any issues I’ve had.
As a mature student, how have you found your experience?
My overall experience at Loughborough has been excellent. I probably wouldn’t be in anywhere near as good shape as I currently am if I wasn’t at University. Plus I am constantly building for my future.
I try to treat each day as a ‘normal’ work day so I try to only do University work 9am-6pm then that leaves me the evenings free to play sport and learn a language. I do sometimes do ‘over-time’ to get coursework done which means I can keep on top of things so I can still have a life and enjoy the things on offer here at the University. This includes the societies I’m involved in; I am a member of Velocity (Transport society), Real Ale society, Rock society and of course the Mature Students Association.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I hope to get on a graduate scheme within the logistics industry, ideally with a shipping line, cargo airline or multimodal logistics firm. Without a degree I would never be able to do this.
What would you say to someone considering your course?
Do it! It’s a big change but there are people here to help and it’s not as daunting as you think.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
There are great societies to join and the chance to play sport at many levels. I have joined societies and everyone is very accommodating. I currently play American Football for the AU and they have been very welcoming. The entire experience and being able to say you are studying at Loughborough is a great feeling; the name holds some great esteem.
Has Loughborough inspired you?
It has given me a particular focus on exactly where I want to be when I graduate. It has shown me a certain area in which I want to work and has given me the skills and tools to get there.
