FAQ

What is the difference between the MEng and BEng courses? Top

The MEng course is a year longer than the BEng. The content of the MEng and BEng courses are the same for the first two years.

The MEng programme gives students the opportunity to study for an extra year. Subjects cover more breadth by offering management/business topics and the option of a European language. Depth of knowledge is increased by including technical topics studied at a more advanced level. The individual final year project for the MEng is a more significant piece of work than for the BEng and may be carried out at a European university. These extra skills are attractive to employers.

Is it possible to change courses once I have started?Top

This type of transfer will require the permission of the Programme Director.

You can request a transfer from Aero to Auto, or vice versa, within the first two weeks of the Academic Year. After this, we would only consider transfer between programmes at the end of the first year.

What are the opportunities for learning foreign languages?Top

MEng students are able to study a foreign language, at an appropriate level. The languages offered are usually French, German or Spanish. Students can in addition, choose to study languages in their own time and there is very good provision here at Loughborough to do this.

When can I visit the Department?Top

The Department holds Student Visit Days between November and April. These take place after your UCAS form has been received in the Department. We read through your application, looking at your personal statement and your reference/predictions from your school. We may then make you an offer based on the form or invite you for a 15-20 minute interview with a member of staff. Applicants are also given the opportunity to tour the Department and campus.

Will I definitely get a place in a Hall of Residence in my First Year?Top

If you accept Loughborough as your ‘Firm’ choice, you will be sent a pack of information regarding accommodation – usually around April/May. If you are then given a place at Loughborough at results time, you will be guaranteed accommodation in one of our Halls of Residence. Those who put Loughborough as an insurance place are next in priority. View the Student Accommodation website for more information on our accommodation.

I’m not sure if I want to do an industrial placement year or not – does that matter?Top

We have contact with many companies who are willing to take students for Industrial Training. In the first year we hold a meeting regarding Industrial Training with all new students. If you have started on a non-DIS programme and want to change, you have up until Christmas of the Second Year to decide. This involves you notifying the Department that you wish to change your route of study.

Your CV is put forward to companies who may request you to attend an interview. The decision to employ you rests with the company. You will have a supervisor in the company and from the University and on successful completion of the year, you will be awarded a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Do I have to be good at sport to come to Loughborough?Top

Not necessarily, as there are many other clubs and societies that you may wish to join. Information about this would be available during Freshers’ Week at the start of the year.

If you wish to take part in sport at a social level, the hall committees run sporting teams for all levels of ability.

How much direct contact will I have with tutors?Top

Contact time averages at approximately 20-22 hours throughout the course of a week. This is comprised of lectures and tutorials, mainly during the morning; with labwork taking place in the afternoon.

Are there any scholarships or bursaries available?Top

The University operates a bursary scheme for eligible full-time UK undergraduates. The bursaries are cash payments towards living and course costs. More information on eligibility can be found on the University's Tuition Fees and Financial Support pages. The Department is also able to provide scholarships and bursaries for international students. Visit our International Office website for more information.
