Aeronautical Engineering (BEng)

Course overview
This course is aimed at those wishing to pursue a career in the aerospace industries, Government research establishments and appropriate branches of the armed forces.
The first two years cover the basic principles of aerospace technologies and their application to aircraft and aero-engine design and development.
The final year of study involve work alongside Research Groups in the Department or in industry. There is also significant project work, allowing you to gain experience of real engineering problems.

This degree has been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and The Royal Aeronautical Society under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords. |
Course content
Year 1
- The aim of Year 1 is to provide a good grounding in engineering subjects
- Material covered is common to both BEng and MEng students
- Exam/coursework ratio:
- Lectured subjects: 80/20 exam/coursework
- Hands-on subjects: 50/50 exam/coursework
Modules
Each year, students study a number of different modules and on successful completion of a module, credits are awarded. One module is typically worth 10 credits. A total of 120 credits must be accumulated each year.
