Course structure and teaching

Course structure
The way in which your course will be structured depends on whether you are studying an MEng or BEng, and whether you decide to take a year out in industry.
| MEng | BEng |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Year 1 |
| Year 2 | Year 2 |

The academic year
Each academic year is divided into two fifteen week semesters each comprising twelve teaching weeks, followed by exams during weeks 13, 14 and 15. The courses are divided into modules and you will take the equivalent of 6 x 10 credit modules each semester. You will still have vacations at the end of the traditional terms (December, March and June).
Course teaching
How will I be taught?
Teaching and learning is achieved through a combination of lectures, tutorial sessions, laboratory practicals, projects and seminars.
Lectures
Lectures enable students to grasp the basic concepts, ideas and approaches relevant to the topic. Problems classes take place in small groups and through solving problems reinforce and develop students’ understanding of the subject.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be assessed via a mixture of exams and coursework. The ratio of exams to coursework varies between modules, but is typically 70% examination and 30% coursework in the first year (Part A). Typically in the second year (Part B), the ratio is 80% examination and 20% coursework. By the final year, there is greater emphasis on project work. The BEng project is worth 30 credits, the MEng the project is worth 60 credits.
