Feedback Control of Combustion Instabilities

Speaker: Dr Aimee Morgans, Imperial College
Date: Wednesday 25th May, 1.30pm
Venue: Stewart Miller Building, Room SM2.14

Combustion Instabilities are plaguing the development of low NOx combustors in gas turbines. We consider feedback control strategies for suppressing combustion instabilities, including both active feedback control and tuned passive control.

In both approaches, measurements from the combustor are used to vary some combustor input or parameter (for example fuel flow rate, or the geometry of a passive damper). Experimental and numerical results will be presented, along with related issues such as combustion noise and reduced order modelling for flow resonances.

The speaker is Dr Aimee Morgans. Aimee’s research interests are in control of unstable flows, aeroacoustics and flow instability. She did her PhD at Cambridge University, has held an RAEng/EPSRC Research Fellow in the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London, where she is now a Lecturer.
