Rachel Thomson elected as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor Rachel Thomson

Professor Rachel Thomson has become Loughborough's first female Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Formerly the Dean of our School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering and previously Head of the Department of Materials, Rachel is now the University's Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching. Although this new leadership role brings many strategic responsibilities across the University, Rachel is still teaching students and remains an active researcher in materials for energy applications.

There are many notable achievements and successful projects that Rachel has been responsible for, but just a couple that have delivered real impact and benefits for our students, have been the building of STEMLab - archived 1 October 2021 a £17M purpose designed facility housing cutting-edge teaching laboratories and workshops that support Loughborough's Science and Engineering programmes. Also the campus-wide installation and adoption of ReView, Loughborough's system of lecture capture and streaming, which has made almost all taught sessions available to students to watch again via their online learning accounts.

Congratulations Rachel from all your colleagues in the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering!

Rachel has been interviewed for a larger news item on the main university website and has shared some excellent insights into her career with advice for aspiring female engineers.
