Applied Aerodynamics
Also a member of the Sports Technology Research Group.
Research Interests and Activities
The aerodynamics of bluff bodies, with particular emphasis on road vehicles and football aerodynamics. Current and recent research projects include:
- Investigations of the effect of freestream turbulence on the aerodynamic optimisation of road vehicles.
- Investigations of bluff body transient aerodynamic loads
- The application of active flow control techniques to Automotive Wake flows
- Aerodynamic studies and in flight behaviour of footballs.
- The measurement and optimisation of road vehicle drag on the road.
Work is primarily experimental, using the approximately one-quarter scale low speed wind tunnel designed in house. The principle measurement techniques are low speed two component and three component planar PIV, Hot-wire, pressure and balance measurements.
External Activities

- Invited lectures: ECARA, Lucerne, Switzerland, 2004. (European carmakers Aerodynamics Research Association) World Conference on Science in Football, Nagoya, Japan 2011
- Advisory Roles: Advisory group of the Motorsport Academy.
- Referee for Journal of Fluids, Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, (Parts C, D and P), International Journal of Vehicle Design and ASME., Experiments in Fluids.
