Air induction noise reduction during turbocharger surge events
As part of the on-going quest to make vehicles more fuel efficient, petrol engines are being downsized and thus more commonly equipped with turbochargers. Some manufacturers have encountered novel noise problems on their petrol engine at surge events of the turbochargers. Essentially as the throttle is rapidly closed from the wide open throttle position, a pressure surge occurs on the engine side of the compressor that causes a back flow through the compressor, which results in a loud "chirp" type of noise that is clearly audible in the passenger compartment. The aim of the project is firstly to understand the basic mechanism of noise generation that gives rise to the noise problem outlined above. Once the basic mechanism has been established, attention will be given to the identification of cost effective solutions to overcome the problem
