Additional Information

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY

Ethical Approvals (Human Participants) Sub-Committee

Background/History of the Sub-Committee

The Ethical Advisory Committee (EAC) was established in 1987. One the Committee's first tasks was to establish a Code of Practice on Investigations involving Human Participants, and the Committee is responsible for ensuring that this Code of Practice is regularly updated.

Investigations involving human participants are undertaken in several departments in the University, in the course of teaching and research. The University seeks to ensure that the conduct of all its staff and students carrying out such work, whether human biological, psychological or sociological, conforms to accepted professional and ethical standards and is known to do so. The Ethical Advisory Committee and Ethical Advisory Sub-Committee were established to guide and assist investigators, and to ensure that full consideration is given to protecting the rights, and the health and safety of participants.

In Summer 2012, the Loughborough University Ethics Committee was established, whose role was to consider any ethical issues that affected the University as a whole. As part of this process, the Ethical Advisory Committee was altered to become a Sub-Committee of the main structure, and was given a new title and amended remit. The role of the Sub-Committee is still the same, to guide and assist investigators, and to ensure that full consideration is given to protecting the rights, health and safety of the participants. The Sub-Committee is also still responsible for updating the Code of Practice on Investigations involving Human Participants. The Sub-Committee's new title is Ethical Approvals (Human Participants) Sub-Committee.
